Dog and Walrus: a story by Alex Zulawnik, Grade 3.
Once upon a time in a blazing hot jungle there was a school that had two best friends, Dog and Walrus. Dog was a German shepherd that was good at running, hunting and science. Walrus was good at fighting, swimming and eating fast. Every year the school had a competition with four rounds. The winner would get a gold trophy. On the day before the competition, Walrus said,
“I am totally going to win the speed competition.” Dog disagreed and said,
“You know I’m faster than you.” And for the whole recess they were fighting over who is better.
The next day at school, Dog and Walrus were ready to compete against each other. The first round of the competition was a race. The first one to go through the finish line won. Dog was in first place and Walrus was dragging himself to the finish line. He barely completed the race. Dog won the first round. The second round was a scavenger hunt for a ball. The ball was red with two blue lines and Dog found the ball in the corner of the school. Walrus was all dizzy.
The third round was wrestling and Walrus did a belly flop and landed on top of the Dog. The fourth was swimming. For Walrus it was easy. Dog looked like he was poofed out .
At the end they had two points on Dog’s team and two on Walrus’s team. Dog won the scavenger hunt and racing. And Walrus won swimming and wrestling. Then Walrus and Dog realized everyone was good at something.
The end.
This warm story with a meaningful message by our grade 3 student has all the elements: description, dialogue and character development.
