Our writing classes provide students with the tools to share their ideas with the world. In addition to improving grades, our goal is to give students the skills and instruments to handle school and university assignments with confidence, good structure, proper grammar and enriched vocabulary. We strive to open doors to their academic and professional future; to instill a deeper understanding of language, an appreciation of literature, and a love of writing.

OUR METHOD

When I began teaching, I quickly became disillusioned with the existing methods.  Months and months of grammar, spelling and vocabulary worksheets had little impact on improving overall writing skills. On the contrary, these practices hindered students’ confidence and made writing seem like a boring, tedious task. At school, students received demanding assignments and detailed rubrics full of expectations, but little clear instructions on how to master the expected skills. My clients kept saying that their teachers took marks off for lack of details and examples, yet students were not taught the difference between a detail and an example. They said they were never taught various types of examples or techniques to add details to a paragraph. 

At Write Up Your Alley, students learn effective writing techniques that make a difference right away. This helps students tackle homework assignments and improve grades sooner, while the skills that take a long time to develop such as vocabulary, grammar and spelling are taught gradually without hindering the student’s excitement for self expression. This method gives students a quick boost and ensures continuous progress over time. Expectations, based on individual needs, are clearly stated and tracked weekly. Frequent quizzes and warm-up activities ensure that grammar and vocabulary topics covered earlier are not forgotten.
